My teenager son Karl became withdrawn after his father died. As a single parent, I tried to do my best to talk to him. But the more I tried, the more he pulled away. When his report card arrived during his senior year, it said that he had been absent 95 times from classes and had four falling grades for the year. In this way he would never be admitted to a better university. I sent him to the school adviser, and I even begged him. Nothing worked.

One night I felt so powerless that I got down on my knees and asked God for help. \"Please God, I can't do anything more for my son. I'm at the end of my rope. I'm giving the whole thing up to you.\"

I was at work when I got a phone call. A man introduced himself as the headmaster. \"I want to talk to you about Karl's absences.\" Before he could say another word, I choked up (哽咽) and all my disappointment and sadness over Karl came pouring out into the ears of this stranger. \"I love my son, but I just don't know what to do. I've tried everything to get Karl to go back to school and nothing has worked. It's out of my hands.\" For a moment there was silence on the other end of the line. The headmaster seriously said, \"Thank you for your time\

Karl’s next report card showed a marked improvement in his grades. Finally, he was even on the list of the best students at school. In his fourth year, I attended a parent-teacher meeting with Karl. I noticed that his teachers were astonished at the way he had turned himself around. On our way home, he said, \"Mum, remember that call

How To Say “No” To Others

It’s common that sometimes you have to politely refuse others’ offer. This can be difficult, especially when you care about them. Many people feel that they will appear rude if they say “no” to anyone. But sometimes this attitude leads you to long-term unhappiness or you regret later not saying “no” to others. 36 Don’t always say “yes”. Being sweet to others and always saying “yes” might make others happy but not you. 37 Let others know that you have your own priorities(最重要的事) and you can’t say “yes” to all the requests offered to you. Be polite. The biggest reason why people don’t say “no” is that they feel it’s rude to do so. Change your thinking, for you can also say “no” politely. 38 You can give excuses like “ Sorry, I am overloaded with work, so I can’t take new projects.” or “ I would like to go out, but I have planned weekends for family.”

- 7 -

Don’t hesitate (犹豫). 39 If you don’t want to do or agree on something, then directly say “no”. Otherwise the other person will keep waiting for your answer. You can ask for time to think about it if you need to do.

40 If you want to refuse any offer, say “no” and stick to it. There are people who will keep on asking you until you say “yes” to them. Even if faced with continuous insistence, you should not say “yes”. When people are pressuring you, you should stick to your point. They won’t bother you again. A.Just be patient.

B.Stick to “no” even if you feel pressured. C.Here are some gentle ways of saying “no”.

D.If you say “yes” to everyone, they will take it for granted.

E.Give others reasons for saying “no” and they won’t feel bad about it. F.People who feel tough to say “no” generally wait before making a decision. G.Sometimes knowing the reason why they are insisting may make you change your mind.
